Art Journaling Adventures: Handmade Stamp Cutting

Handmade-stamp-cutting A few years agone I experimented with making stamps using cork and foam. I establish it very enjoyable, but a bit limiting in terms of the types of images and patterns I could produce given the materials. Effectually that time, a friend gave me a stamp cutting kit, which included a cut tool and a cake. I was intimidated by it I let it sit down for years, waiting for the "right" idea for a stamp and never dared to open it. Recently, though, having seen some truly beautiful stamps on Pinterest, I decided to take the plunge with the kit, and I am so glad I did. IMG_8678

How to Cutting Your Ain Stamps

In that location are many ways to create amazing stamps without ever ownership special supplies, simply I will talk about found object stamping and using other materials in some other post. For this projection, I used a Speedball cutting tool and block, a pencil, and scissors. The kits price almost $9 at the craft store, and unless yous are working really big, they should yield several stamps.

(I've since discovered Moocarve, an even nicer surface for stamp cutting and block press. I however use the lino cut tools from Speedball though.)

one. Draw a Picture or Pattern

IMG_8816 For this stamp, I found an image I liked and used it as inspiration for my stamp. It was round in shape, so I began by tracing a jar. IMG_8830Next, I drew this algae-like pattern, or as someone called it, the "alien manus," on the block. You tin also trace or describe an image on tracing paper and transfer information technology to the block, simply I prefer to draw freehand when I can considering it saves me a step. Remember that if you are using text information technology must be a mirror image, or it will be backwards in your finished product. In that location'south a expert tutorial on transferring images from tracing paper to the block here.

ii. Cutting Your Postage stamp

3. Examination Impress Your Stamp and Adjust

IMG_8864 With the test impress, I can see any areas I want to adjust. On the right side of my journal folio beneath, you can meet where I did several test prints. I trimmed and adjusted a fleck at a time and so re-tested the results. I take noticed that it'due south important to run into the postage stamp on the page all on its own, but as well as part of a pattern. Sometimes a stamp that I dislike on its own makes an amazing pattern. This stamp is a fine case of that. IMG_8870 You may recall this stamp below from my fine art journaling video – information technology was one that I didn't especially intendance for all past itself, but I found it created slap-up texture when repeated and overlapped. This is the beauty of fine art – information technology teaches you how to take your "mistakes" and plough them into successes. IMG_8200
